Do Not Overlook Your Aircraft’s TKS Anti-Ice System
Ice In Florida? Yep.
Florida pilots are accustomed to sunshine, heat, and summer thunderstorms. However, warm weather on the ground does not guarantee ice free conditions at altitude.
We all know that as an aircraft climbs, temperatures can rapidly decrease. When an aircraft encounters visible moisture in the appropriate temperature range, ice may accumulate on critical surfaces. Even a relatively small amount of ice can affect airflow, increase drag, reduce lift, and change the way an aircraft handles.
That is why the TKS anti-ice system should not be forgotten during routine aircraft maintenance.
Include TKS in Every Service Conversation
When scheduling your aircraft for servicing, ensure that in addition to checking other fluids such as fuel, engine oil, and hydraulic fluid, the technician also checks the TKS fluid quantity and the overall condition of the ice protection system, following the relevant maintenance guidelines.
Depending on the aircraft and the work being performed, this may include:
- Checking the TKS fluid level
- Looking for visible leaks or signs of service needs
- Reviewing system indications
- Confirming proper system operation when appropriate

On May 24th we celebrate Aviation Maintenance Technician Day. Though we are grateful every day for the work technicians do behind the scenes and the contributions they make to flying safety and customer service, on this day we want to thank the dedicated professionals who help make every flight a safe and enjoyable one. From routine inspections and troubleshooting to major repairs and detailed maintenance, aviation maintenance technicians play a vital role in supporting safe flying for everyone in every airplane.
Aviation Maintenance Technician Day is observed on May 24th in honor of Charles Taylor, the mechanic who built the engine that powered the Wright brothers’ first successful flight in 1903. Often referred to as the “Father of Aviation Maintenance,” Charles Taylor’s skill, innovation, and dedication helped lay the foundation for the aviation maintenance profession we know today. His legacy continues every day in hangars, maintenance shops, and flight lines around the world.
